True Stories Safety Trainers Would Rather Forget

March 11, 2009

Gun Control

When I first started as Safety Director, one of my jobs was to train our guys in using power actuated tools – literally, a gun that shoots nails. There were about 20 people in the room. Unbeknownst to me, the warehouse guy made sure the gun he sent with me was cleaned and well lubricated.

The first time I picked up the gun from its case, it slipped right out of my hands and hit the floor. The room turned to chaos as everyone ran, ducked or hid behind a chair, thinking the gun would fire. Fortunately, I hadn’t had time to load it yet!
