The REM Designation, Part 1 of 2

May 2, 2008

This is part of our continuing series on the certifications for safety professionals. Today, we're going to look at the American designation, the Registered Environmental Manager (REM).

What is an REM?

A Registered Environmental Manager is responsible for many things, including:

  • Coordinating environmental health and safety programs;
  • Conducting environmental assessments and inspections;
  • Performing environmental audits; and
  • Managing hazardous materials and their transportation.

REM Requirements and Qualifications

All REM candidates must fill out a form to register for REM certification through the National Registry of Environmental Professionals (NREP). (The form can be accessed here.)

To be considered for REM candidacy, all participants must:

  • Submit an examination fee of $250.
  • Assert that he or she possesses a minimum of five years of professional experience in the information security field.
  • Provide documentation supporting the educational requirements (see below).
  • Successfully answer six questions regarding criminal history and related background.
  • Legally commit to abide by the NREP Code of Ethics.

Education

All candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in an environmentally related discipline. This includes physical, biological and health sciences, engineering and environmental majors. Three years of acceptable work experience may be substituted for each year of an academic degree program.

Work Experience

Candidates must document five years' work experience at a professional level. This experience must be directly related to environmental engineering, health, science or management.

Exam

The REM examination consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, with a time limit of two hours and 45 minutes. Candidates must pass the exam with a scaled score of 700 or better. (Examination content can be found in the Candidate Information Handbook.)

Proficiency Maintenance and Recertification

NREP professional registrations and certifications are issued for one year. All REMs are required to provide proof of 15 hours of continuing education or activity on an annual basis prior to recertification of their credentials. The NREP provides a checklist of activities which may be used to establish proficiency maintenance. The annual renewal fee is $90.

Conclusion

Canadians can seek the professional designation of Canadian Certified Environmental Practitioner (CCEP), conducted by the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board (CECAB). We'll look at this next week.

MAY DAY, MAY DAY

International Workers' Day

By Glenn Demby

The first of May has long been an important date. In ancient times, May first was the pagan holiday of Beltane, the fertility sabbath when the gods and goddesses would get together and do their mating. Meanwhile, back on earth, it was basically last call for planting.

Although it would eventually shed some of its pagan trappings, May Day would remain a rite of spring. Modern traditions include dancing around the maypole, filling up baskets with flowers for loved ones and even strewing flowers by doors and windows to keep out troublesome fairies.

In the 20th century, May Day became associated with the international labor movement. May 1 - Labor Day - was a red letter day on the Soviet calendar and remains a holiday not only in socialist but capitalist states around the world.
