THE 6 COMMANDMENTS OF A COMMITTEE MEMBER

October 22, 2008

1. Thou Shalt Practice What Thou Preacheth

Committee members, past and present, are role models for others in the organization. As such, they must honor all safety rules at all times.

2. Thou Shalt Praise Those Who Practice Safety

Committee members should go out of their way to “catch” fellow workers doing things right and praise their efforts. Positive reinforcement is always a good thing; positive reinforcement coming from a committee member, however, takes on a special potency.

3. Thou Shalt Take Pride in Thy Committee Work

Committee members should make it clear to their peers that they’re proud to serve on the committee.

4. Thou Shalt Not Make False Promises

Committee members need to refrain from promising more than they can deliver. There’s a big difference between “I’ll take care of it” and “I’ll look into it.”

5. Thou Shalt Support Thy Fellow Committee Members

Committee members should look after each other and present a united front vis-à-vis people outside the committee.

6. Thou Shalt Keep an Eye on the Big Picture

Members need to remember that the purpose of their work is to help the organization and that nobody’s bigger than the organization. A strong safety program needs to mesh with the whole organization and be considered an equal to productivity, quality and cost.
