Stage a Phony Death to Prevent a Real One
April 27, 2010
Talking to your workers about safety isn’t always enough to prevent illness and injury. You must also ensure that workers talk to each other when they’re on the job. After all, if workers don’t look out for their co-workers, who will? Unfortunately, many companies have a hard time convincing their workers that the need to communicate is real.
One dramatic and proven technique – suitably poignant for International Day of Mourning – that you can use to shatter complacency and get workers talking to each other is to stage a fatality. Here’s how Ralph White did it in his safety meeting.

Hi Catherine
Thanks for the interesting article.
I would like to know your view point: Would this not create the potential to for HSE personnel loose credibility at site?
Again, I think its a great idea. Just want to hear different opinions.
Thanks
GoJo
Hi Gordon,
If it's done the way that Ralph sets out in his article, I think it would drive home the importance of what it is HSE personnel are trying to accomplish.
Take a look at how Ralph White did it and let me know what you think.
