Topic: HEALTH AND SAFETY OBSERVANCE

October 10, 2009 is National Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day

October 7, 2009

October 10th is “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day.” The month of October was selected for this observance date because it’s one of the peak months for traffic fatalities. In fact, in 1999, October 9th was the most dangerous day of the year to be on the road. On that day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 207 people died in traffic crashes. It’s probably no coincidence then that this week is also “Drive Safely to Work Week.”

Here are 8 quick and easy ways you and your workers can reduce your odds of becoming a traffic fatality:

  1. While driving don’t talk or text message on your cell phone,
  2. Drive defensively,
  3. Obey the posted speed limits,
  4. Share the road with other vehicles like motorcycles, bicycles and trucks,
  5. Slow down in bad weather and in special construction and school zones,
  6. Never drink and drive,
  7. Always buckle up, and
  8. Wear a helmet when bicycling or motorcycling.
