9 Ways to Bridge the Communications Gap
November 12, 2008
Today's workforce is rich in diversity, with workers from many cultures, languages, ethnic origins and belief systems bringing their strengths and perspectives to the job.
These differences make good communication more important than ever. A safe workplace depends on everyone understanding the hazards, following safe procedures and looking out for one another.
Share with your workers these 9 ways that they can help bridge the communication gaps in your diverse workforce:
- Get to know your fellow workers as individual persons.
- Learn about your co-workers' cultures and customs.
- Give the benefit of the doubt in your dealings with fellow workers. Instead of feeling slighted or insulted, consider the possibility that mannerisms or words may have a different meaning in another culture.
- Be aware of the challenges faced by new workers. Physical disability, single parenthood, language differences, experiencing prejudice, starting over in a new country - these are just some of the difficulties various fellow workers may be going through. Think how you would feel in similar circumstances.
- Listen and lend support where you can.
- Take responsibility for helping your fellow workers develop safe work habits. Instead of making fun of someone who is struggling to fit in, try to help. Be willing to answer questions, explain things and demonstrate safe work practices.
- Be aware of how safety information is presented. If you have suggestions on how it could be communicated more effectively, tell your supervisor. Training materials could be translated and greater use could be made of photos or illustrations, which are easier for everyone to understand.
- Do not make jokes about race, ethnic origin, sex or any other topic which could be offensive to another worker. Discourage others from making such remarks.
- Do not tolerate intolerant behavior by other workers. Speak out against prejudice.
