2 True Stories that Safety Trainers Would Rather Forget

March 18, 2009

The Nozzle Frazzle

Last year I scheduled a refresher course for refueling our propane powered forklifts. When it was my turn to refuel the truck, I hadn’t secured the nozzle to the tank properly. When I flipped the switch, the hose flew off and scared the hell out of everybody. Fortunately all the safeguards were in place and working so there were no injuries or damage, except for my ego.

Please don’t include my name, I’m still embarrassed.

The Panties We’ll Never Forget

We employ the services of a major consulting Human Resources and Safety firm to guide us so we are compliant with regulatory guidelines. I have been associated with this company for over 15 years and enjoy the expert help they give us.

The safety coordinator was here to instruct a class on office safety. With 30 people in the room all focused directly on her, she sat in a chair to show us that tilting the chair back on its two back legs was not a good thing to do, evidently. The chair fell over backwards; her dress flew up, and we were witness to a bright red glow of the left and right facial cheeks of her very embarrassed look!

This class remains the one remembered and the little yellow smiley faces on her underwear will never be forgotten! Nobody, but nobody leans back in their chairs anymore.

The second story reminds me of a joint safety committee meeting I had one day a few years back. Everyone on the committee was male except for me. I tend to talk with my hands when demonstrating things and as I was talking I spread my arms straight out at my sides. I immediately noticed a strange look appearing on everyone's face at the same time, and luckily one of the older men told me to look down. The two middle buttons on my silk shirt had come undone and everyone was looking at my black lace bra underneath!!! Extremely embarassing, but I buttoned up and moved on rather quickly, as you can imagine. None of them ever mentioned it to me again, but I heard it was all over the plant by the next hour!! Still makes me laugh to think about it.
