SUPERVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION

SAFETY-RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervisors and line managers have a direct and important role in ensuring that all work is performed in a healthy and safe manner. Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility shall be considered as part of the supervisor's performance appraisal. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:

1. Weekly Safety Meetings. Not less than once a week, supervisors shall conduct a meeting lasting 15 to 30 minutes on a specific safety-related topic to be attended by all employees on the shoproom floor.

2. Addressing Safety at Group Meetings. Supervisors shall ensure that each time a group meeting is held to discuss work on a project the status of safety on the project, e.g., accidents, incidents, etc., will be addressed at some point during the meeting.

3. Weekly Inspections. Supervisors shall inspect the [ specify grounds ] to check all items on the ABC Department Checklist at least once a week. Supervisors shall write a safety work order addressing each hazard they find and check with the appropriate personnel to ensure that the order is fulfilled.

4. Observation Tours. Each month, supervisors shall conduct no less than two safety observation tours of high risk activities like work in confined space to verify that employees are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations.

5. One-on-One Contacts. Supervisors shall conduct at least five one-on-one contact sessions with workers per week to discuss a safety issue, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment.

6. Weekly MSDS Assessment. At least once a week, supervisors shall conduct an inspection to verify that all controlled substances in the department have been classified, affixed with proper labels and have a complete, up-to-date MSDS.

7. Responses to Incidents. Supervisors shall respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to, accidents and near misses, and write a report that explains what happened, identifies the cause and recommends corrective action within 48 hours of the incident's occurrence. Supervisors shall follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken.

8. Weekly Safety Report. Supervisors shall write a weekly report addressing safety issues within their department, including accidents and incidents, results of inspections, etc. and submit it to the [ list title of supervisor's boss ].

9. Safety Initiatives. Supervisors shall submit by the 1 st and 15 th of the month a recommendation to improve safety and/or get employees to take a more proactive role in their own safety to [ list title of supervisor's boss ].

10. Documentation. Supervisors shall keep detailed records demonstrating their fulfillment of all the above responsibilities. Management will examine these records as part of the supervisor's annual performance appraisal.
