NFPA 70E PPE SELECTION

October 22, 2008

Table 1: Example of NFPA 70E Hazard/Risk Category Classifications by Task

600V equipment other than MCCs, Panelboards and Switchgear
Task Category
Work on energized parts, including voltage testing 2*
(2* means a double-layer switching hood, hearing protection, hard hat, leather gloves, and leather work shoes are required in addition to the Category 2 clothing requirements.)
(If the available short circuit current is less than 10,000 amperes the hazard/risk category can be reduced by one Category level.)

Table 2: FR clothing and corresponding incident energy for Hazard/Risk Categories

NFPA 70E establishes five "Hazard/Risk Categories" of FR clothing based on ability to limit the injury to a curable burn at different levels of incident energy:
Category 0 acceptable for incident energy exposure of 0 - 2 cal/cm2
Category 1 " 2 - 4 cal/cm2
Category 2 " 4 - 8 cal/cm2
Category 3 " 8 - 25 cal/cm2
Category 4 " 25 - 40 cal/cm2

Category 0 is only if the table method is used. If you have a flash calculation, then category 0 is not applicable.
