Business Card Do’s & Don’ts
The business card is one of the essential tools of the networking process. You need to bring lots of cards with you to any professional event and engagement you plan to attend. Also keep in mind that the process of giving and receiving business cards involves a certain etiquette that you should be aware of:
DO ask the people you give your card to for their card. Remember what Mark said about networking being a two-way street.
DON’T stuff the person’s business card into your purse or wallet right away.
DO look at the person’s card when he or she gives it to you. In addition to signifying genuine interest, looking at the card might lead you to discover something that fuels further discussion and adds a different dimension to the meeting and relationship.
DO write comments and notes about the person on the back of the business card. This facilitates follow up.
DON’T be stingy with your business cards. As Mark says, you never know who’s going to help you. So give your card to anyone you meet who might even remotely be able to help you. And don’t hesitate to pass out two or more cards to the same person just in case.
DO insert a copy of your business card in all subsequent mail correspondence with the source.

Glenn is correct. As a consultant, I always have business cards because I don't know when my card will result in a new job. But those in the private sector need to realize that their help will come when someone else has their card. Keep those cards flowing!
