Doubting One’s Safety Profession Decision
I can indeed appreciate what Corey Jones is referring to in his article of Feb/18. There are many times during the year when I believe that my safety efforts and daily reminders are never truly valued and quite misunderstood. 2009 was a particular bad year for our distribution centre in terms of accidents; however the organization as a whole experienced great results which led me to believe that I was not making much of an impact here.
Again, as Mr. Jones pointed out, I cannot control every unsafe act a fellow colleague may commit, but having said that I found myself wondering if someone else may have achieved better results. This self doubt led to some new initiatives, policy changes and a fresh year in which to roll-out these amendments.
I am not sure if it works for everyone, but every now and then a little soul searching helps re-set my perspective on things. So far this year we are off to a much better start (knock on wood).

As I attempt to continue my desire to be a professional in Safety and Management, doing research and following trends within this field,it leaves me to wonder will my trends continue?
I have become frustrated on many levels with bad management, bad cultures and just plain bad companies, it leaves me to think will I ever find a good, reputable, caring company that has moral, values and has a belief in their employee's.
Will I always find the bad companies that hide things and falsely say they believe in safety?
Will I ever find that company that will endorse my career and my morals, values and desire to be a better manager, supervisor.
Do these companies really exist or will it always be games?
