15 Ways to Build Your Career
October 15, 2009
If you’re hoping to move up the corporate ladder, here are some tips from career/job interview author Bonnie Lowe to keep in mind:
- Avoid gossiping. Don’t let your loose lips sink your advancement ship.
- Stay loyal to your company, your boss and your team.
- Know what your company is trying to accomplish and suggest ways to advance it in that direction.
- If you don't know the answer to something, don’t pretend you do. Be honest.
- If you need to discuss a problem with higher-ups, come armed with suggested solutions.
- Respect everyone above and below you.
- If you mess up, take responsibility for it. Don’t blame others.
- Don’t be in too much of a rush to advance up the ladder. Prove yourself at every rung.
- Do more than is asked of you and do things without being asked.
- Take a course outside of work that can boost your skills and make you more marketable.
- As tempting as it is to rub it in when you are proven right, never say, “I told you so.”
- Never, ever, let anyone hear you say, “That’s not in my job description.”
- If you develop and implement a great idea and get praised for it, don’t forget to give your team credit too.
- Let go of anger about situations. Grudges can come back to bite you.
- When a work situation starts snowballing, ask for help before it gets out of control.
