System Safety Specialist

Compass Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, Inc., is currently seeking a System Safety Specialist. As a startup operation, we have an immediate need for someone with exceptional business judgment and discretion as well as the initiative and competence to make a significant contribution to the organization.

Job Purpose:
System Safety Specialists as a group are responsible for analysis and the recommendation of actions that further the interest of Safety in the Compass operation. Each such position is assigned an area of primary activity, but all have broad responsibility to ensure, through effective observation, evaluation, investigation and analysis, that all Company safety policies, processes, and regulations are respected and complied with. The FOQA Specialist position supports the Manager of Safety in the daily administration of the Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) Program and with regard to other safety related duties as required.

The FOQA programs entails the collection and analysis of digital flight data generated during normal operations, providing important insights into the total flight operations environment and high-lighting otherwise unseen potential risks to safety. The information and insights provided by FOQA can be used to improve safety by significantly enhancing training effectiveness, operational procedures, maintenance and engineering procedures, and air traffic control procedures.

Job Qualifications:
Preferable qualifications may include, but are not limited to:
·         Understanding of Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) principles;
·         Strong understanding of safety analysis, trending and risk assessment, including the ability to analyze, trend and interpret complex flight data;
·         Strong computer application knowledge;
·         Professional integrity while also being caring and compassionate with a sense of humor and an ability to maintain positive relationships with fellow employees and customers;
·         Must be able to read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Must also have the ability to write effective reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals;
·         Public speaking skills that allow effective presentation on both the individual level and to large audiences, including Compass employees, industry professionals and federal agencies.

Education/or Experience:
Education:
·         Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience with specific emphasis on flight operations and safety analysis.

Job Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
The System Safety Specialist FOQA (Flight Operational Quality Assurance) position requires demonstrated skills in the following areas:

·         Aviation standards and safe operating practices;
·         Command of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs);
·         Professional experience and or education in flight operations or maintenance;
·         Professional experience and or education in aviation safety;
·         Professional experience or education in FOQA and ASAP principles;
·         Experience in complex data analysis, trending and risk assessment;
·         Excellent analytical and problem solving skills;
·         Ability to draft written reports presenting complex data analyses;
·         Present reports in lecture style formats, and explain complex technical subjects;
·         Technical computer expertise and proficient knowledge in commercial off-the-shelf applications, such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint;
·         Strong organizational and planning skills;
·         Knowledge of commercial aircraft systems and performance measurements.

Language Skills:
·         Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
·         Professional experience and/or education in aviation safety, including but not limited to previous airline/military experience, collegiate education in aerospace, flight, ATC, maintenance, safety or other aviation certificate programs;
·         Private or professional pilot with instrument rating or greater and/or a valid (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant Certificate;

Mathematical Skills:
·         Intermediate mathematical competency
·         Experience in complex data analysis, trending and risk assessment;
·         Excellent analytical and problem solving skills;

Physical Demands:
·         Ability to lift, carry and move light to medium weight of 10 – 30 pounds.
·         Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity.
·         There are prolonged periods during which individuals are working seated at a desk with their computer. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

Job Specifics:
·         Individual must be willing to accept occasional travel (30%), and rotating on-call duties.
·         Individual must be able to assist other Safety Departmental personnel in non-FOQA related duties including, but not limited to investigations, emergency response, ASAP and Internal Evaluations.
·         Assist the Manager of Safety in development, implementation and administration of a Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program;
·         Conduct FOQA analysis, trending and risk analysis;
·         Coordinate data collection and process data to the FOQA server;
·         Evaluate findings, comprehensive fixes and trends and create a plan of action to identify and correct safety issues. Prepare monthly reports for presentation to management, ALPA and the FAA;
·         Track findings and corrective actions to ensure follow-up and completion;
·         Perform safety analysis and trending of events based on risk level;
·         Implement a systematic approach for assessing and documenting the impact of issues and/or problems derived from FOQA data;
·         Create and maintain professional relationships with the individuals leading FOQA Programs at other airlines;
·         Create spreadsheets, charts, and presentations of safety data for senior management review and action, to include recommendations and/or action plans;
·         Maintain confidentiality of FOQA data;
·         Work closely with union counterparts on the day-to-day operation of the FOQA program.
·         Conduct event-specific investigations into all safety related aspects of company operations, including, but not limited to accidents, incidents, HAZMAT, OSHA, EPA and others as appropriate;
·         Conduct regular observations of the operation and report findings to the Manager of Safety;
·         Write clear concise reports describing the details of events, root causes and corrective actions;
·         Participate with senior management, as appropriate, through reports, weekly briefings, meetings, and conferences;
·         Represent Compass Airlines at meetings, conferences and training sessions with government and industry groups as appropriate;
·         Attend safety-related trade functions, training and meetings with federal, state and private groups; specifically with the FAA, DOT, ALPA, NTSB, OSHA, EPA, Delta/Northwest Airlines and other Connection partners.
·         Conduct safety training and education to Compass Airline’s employee with additional job specific education as needed;
·         Write professional articles and share safety findings and corrective actions to be published and distributed in the safety newsletter.  Assist the Manager of Safety by organizing and conducting emergency response training and drills.
