Senior Manager, Risk, Environmental, Health and Safety

Gate Gourmet, a gategroup company, is the world’s largest independent provider of catering and provisioning services for airlines and railroads. We serve more than 200 million meals a year to our 250-plus customers at more than 100 airport locations around the globe.

We are currently looking for a Senior Manager, Risk, Environmental, Health and Safety to join our corporate team based in Reston, Virgina.  Reporting to the Vice President, EHS and Assets, the Sr. Manager, EHS is responsible for managing the compliance of the facilities and their operations in the fields of Safety, Environment and Health and developing programs for nationwide compliance covering 7,500 employees.

The ideal candidate for this role is a team oriented, motivated and experienced EHS professional who can manage both the administrative functions and the not so glorious aspects of the job that includes on-site visits and getting your hands dirty!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively seeking improvement opportunities to build prevention solutions to environmental and safety issues.
  • Manage regulatory and internal requirement changes for immediate and flawless adaptation in operations.
  • Support and at times manage insurance and risk processes

Environmental:

  • Ability to travel and asses both new and existing facilities for Environmental and Safety Compliance
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with local, state and federal environmental and safety regulations
  • Work with units to maintain compliant with environmental, health and safety regulations
  • Maintain an Environmental Compliance Calendar for all the units
  • Work/Communicate with Regulatory Agencies and Environmental Consulting firms to achieve goals and ensure permits are accurate and in place
  • Maintain records for all units at Corporate office to ensure “records retention” and maintenance
  • Assist with training unit leadership in Environmental, Health, and Safety
  • Assist with obtaining waste profiles for all our waste streams
  • Manage waste stream reduction program(s)
  • Manage/work on a team to continue developing and implementing Gate Gourmet's "Go Green" initiatives

Risk & Safety:

  • Lead team in executing EHS Corporate Initiatives and national roll-out of EHS programs
  • Monitor and develop corrective actions for workers compensation claims/trends
  • Manage and coordinate insurance certificates
  • Manage and measure impact by use of risk/safety scorecards measures
  • Secure and manage proper filing of documentation
  • Prepare loss analysis
  • Further develop Gate Gourmet’s Safety program (PRIDE)
  • Work with operational leadership to optimize deployment of PRIDE program
  • Ensure reporting responsibilities of business units are met
  • Administer corporate policies and procedures governing the administration, operation, and maintenance of safety, health and environmental related topics and make improvement recommendations as needed

General:

  • * Liaise with support functions such as HR, Legal etc. to evaluate and limit potential risks
  • Prepare proposals and reports to senior leadership and in cases to executive group
  • Ensure adherence to departmental budgets and suggest and act upon possible savings or reductions
  • Liaise with business and industry groups to determine upcoming regulatory changes or general trends
  • Actively participate in development of EHS resources in the regions or units
  • Manage and secure integrity of all reports and systems used for data storage

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Engineering or related field

Work Experience:

  • 5 - 7 years experience in environmental, health and safety in a manufacturing and/or retail and/or food production environment required.
  • At least 3 years previous experience managing EHS programs for multiple facilities required
  • Lean manufacturing experience preferred (ISO9000 and/or ISO14000 and/or ISO18000)
  • Proven experience in initiating, developing and maintenance of safety programs and processes.  Samples of work product will be required during the interview process.
  • Previous experience managing/leading a team
  • Previous project management experience required (PMP/Project Certification is not required)
  • Airline and/or food industry experience preferred
  • A proven track record of success and career progression

Job Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and influence skills
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office Package applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access)
  • Various types of claims software to manage claims (Internal training provided)
  • Strong knowledge of environmental management systems, EPA regulations (ISO 14001 experience preferred)
  • Insurance/claim processing, claim administration – vendor relations
  • Analytical Reporting capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills - correspondence to internal and external customers
  • Proven teamwork experience in a fast paced environment

Certificates, licenses and registrations:

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) preferred

Travel:

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time if necessary

Environmental Requirements:

  • Standard office environment
  • When visiting operations facilities may be exposed to physical discomfort due to temperature and noise.
