Safety/Environmental Specialist

The purpose of this position is to oversee the development, implementation and management of the site Safety, Health & Environmental systems to ensure regulatory compliance and to achieve continual improvement in terms of performance and cost effectiveness. Supports plant Operations by educating employees and administering and monitoring safety, health and environmental systems and procedures to ensure the health and safety of all personnel working in the facility. Promotes organizational compliance with all safety, health and environmental regulations. Performs duties and responsibilities for the business consistent with company goals and business unit Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) to include safety, quality, productivity and customer service. This position is responsible for leading, facilitating and responding to related external audits (e.g., OSHA, EPA). The incumbent will be the site liaison for any local community or civic council as related to environmental relations. This position will be the point of contact for any emergency preparedness plans, and response teams. The incumbent will sponsor the respective site Safety, Health & Environmental teams. This position reports to the SHEQ Manager.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates all activities and required audits to insure full compliance with OSHA, EPA, local permit regulations and Unilever framework standards and cascades the site’s Safety & Health Program in a functional and effective manner to the site management team and all employees.
  2. Develop and maintains accurate statistics and reports on work related injuries, at risk behaviors, hazards and losses in order to identify trends that require corrective actions.
  3. Coordinates the investigation of accidents and incidents in accordance with established procedures to determine root causes and recommends corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  4. Serves as the site SHE Pillar Champion and directs the Safety Committee in all activities including training, People Centered Safety initiatives, monthly facility safety audits, LOTO audits.
  5. Supervises the day to day activities of the Safety/Training Facilitator to insure maximum utilization in supporting SHE activities.
  6. Conducts and documents regular safety and environmental audits of the facility to insure compliance with safety rules, procedures and OSHA regulations.
  7. Monitors the on site waste treatment facility to insure they are operating within permit limits; maintains environmental permits and records for wastewater discharge, storm water, hazardous waste disposal, air discharges, spill prevention, well water permit and certified hazardous shipper; monitors track and reports monthly Proforma, Enviro KPI and effluent data; and monitors, track and conducts EPA Tier II and Form R reporting.
  8. Maintain all sit environment permits, as well as site EMS program & site Registrar of Environmental requirements.
  9. Maintain site Crisis Management Plan including various drills within the facility.

Challenges

  1. Insure the site is in compliance with all applicable safety and environmental laws, regulations and Unilever framework standards.
  2. Maintain safety culture of inclusion and accountability that focuses on awareness in continuation of excellent safety performance for the facility.
  3. Promote an environment of team work throughout the facility; insure active involvement of the site leadership team in achieving SHE goals and objectives.
  4. Diplomatic handling of sensitive issues and the ability to establish and foster effective team work with key stakeholders at the facility (HR, the Management team, the employees).
  5. Conduct a plant wide Ergonomics study and design and implement an effective ergonomics program to eliminate potential risks.
  6. Represent the site at Unilever SHE Conferences and Community of Practices workshops and during compliance and/or regulatory audits and inspections represent the site in a professional manner.
  7. Manage all related external SHE relationships with Federal & State agencies and the local community.
  8. Manage internal relationships with Corporate SHE, be a member of the SHE CoP, and benchmark and connect with other Unilever Plants for Best Practices and resource networking.

Scope

  • Workforce comprised of 175 Hourly employees and 36 Salaried.
  • Facility is on 15 acres 281,000 Square feet under roof with 6 lines.
  • Packaging capacity of 1.5 million pounds a day 5-6 day/3 shift operation running 6 lines
  • This position is responsible for proposing and managing the annual SHE budget.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety
  • 6 to 8 years of previous work experience preferably in food manufacturing; knowledge and experience of safety, health and environmental regulations.
