The EHS Department is responsible for the development and implementation of an EHS - Management System, policies and continuous improvement initiatives that support the Human Resource function of maintaining, a safe satisfying work environment. Our goal is to develop and execute an integrated health, safety and environmental strategy that is aligned with business objectives and optimizes our employees working environment by developing progressive, "best in class"; health, wellness, ergonomic, claims, safety, environment programs and services.
Position Summary:
The EHS Manager will report to the Associate Vice President of HR and provide proactive and comprehensive development of EHS programs, services and consultation to the Supply Chain business unit within the retail division of Canadian Tire Corporation. You will have a Senior EHS Consultant as your direct report and work in collaboration with the Supply Chain HR Managers and a professional health, safety, ergonomic and wellness team.
The primary mandate of the role is to implement CTC enterprise wide EHS processes and programs that address the unique Supply Chain business requirements and risk. You will manage, develop, implement EHS processes and programs, including a formal EHS - Management System (EHS-MS), currently being implemented. This allows for standardized processes and system requirements to ensure identification of work place hazards, implementation of controls and elimination/reduction of risk and ensure legislative compliance is met. You will develop timely and accurate reporting of EHS performance data and compliance risks. You will analyze health and safety performance trends, develop business cases(s) and implement recommendations for improvement to Sr. Management's EHS Steering Committee and their Management teams. You will contribute to the development of the corporate wide OHS programs and processes and develop strong business partnerships. The ideal candidate will have a proven record of accomplishment in Environment Health and Safety Management and will demonstrate the ability to lead and implement EHS initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Accountable for the Toronto Operations EHS Management System including:
- Assuming the Project Manager role responsible for the development and implementation of the EHS-MS following the project timelines
- Providing recommendations for control measures for hazards and environmental aspects
- Provide support and council to the Toronto Operations Management Team including Senior Management on their EHS-MS accountabilities
- Work collaboratively with Management to establish annual ESH objectives and targets
- Participate in self assessments and audits of the EHS-MS
- Implement CTC enterprise wide EHS processes and programs that address the unique Supply Chain business requirements and risk
- Provide proactive and comprehensive management, development and execution of EHS processes, programs, services and consultation specific to the Supply Chain division
- Own the accountability for the Toronto Operations EHS- Management System (currently in the 2009 implementation phase)
- Develop processes in collaboration with Corporate legal, finance and risk management to ensure EHS legislative compliance for Supply Chain is met
- Provide coaching and leadership as the Supply Chain - EHS Manager to your direct report; Sr. Supply Chain EHS Consultant
- Collaborate with the Corporate EHS Manager on the development of the corporate wide OHS programs and processes to ensure Supply Chain EHS requirements are considered
- Review and approve EHS action plans as required ensuring objectives and targets are met in accordance with the OHS Act
- Ensure that the EHS Committees are provided with ongoing EHS consultative support
- Develop an EHS training matrix for all Management/Employees and execute training to meet legislative requirements and ensure due diligence is demonstrated
- Participate in external professional EHS associations and applicable seminars, conferences and workshops.
- Provide EHS -SME support for all government on site activities (i.e.; MOL critical injuries. MOL/MOE/Transport Canada on site inspections/ issues
- Develop and complete multiple, timely, accurate reporting of EHS performance data and compliance risks
- Analyze the environment, health and safety performance trends
- Develop business case(s) and present recommendations for continuous improvement to the Sr. Management's EHS Steering Committee and their Management teams.
- Act as a change agent
- Represent Supply Chain at legal proceedings in collaboration with Corporate EHS, legal and finance
- Provide shared responsibility for 24-7 ER response
- Participate on the Supply Chain ETR Crisis Management team
- Initiate appropriate escalation for EHS issues that impact employee safety, legislative compliance including on site Ministry visits and impacts to CTC brand image
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8- 10 years experience as an EHS professional in a variety of warehousing, manufacturing and office environments (prefer large retail organization)
- Minimum of 3 - 5 years experience at the EHS Manager level
- Post secondary education in health, safety and environment studies
- Diploma and or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety (preferred)
- Designation as a Certified Registered Safety Professional or equivalent (complete or near completion preferred)
- Strong EHS acumen demonstrated through progressive EHS experience including functional accountability for multiple EHS disciplines
- EHS technical knowledge including applicable legislation and program development
- EHS knowledge for hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies including program selection for hazard control
- Experience developing, implementing and working in environments with EHS- Management Systems such as CSA Z100, OHSAS18001 and ISO 14000 (an asset)
- Ability to anticipate, recognize and prioritize EHS impacts to the business and execute creative solutions
- Ability to develop a comprehensive EHS training plan
- Proven record of accomplishment in planning, leading and executing EHS programs
- Proven success in developing and maintaining effective consultative relationships with business partners at all levels of the organization
- Ability to effectively manage, develop and motivate individual direct reports and teams
- Proven ability to effectively facilitate meetings and workshops
- Self directed individual with well developed negotiating and conflict resolution skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Proven problem solving, analytical and reporting skills
- Results oriented with excellent implementation skills
- Pro-active, flexible and positive work style
- Working knowledge of MS Office - Word, Power Point, Excel, Parklane System
