Health, Safety, and Security Coordinator

The Role
Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers' Auction Operations Department has an immediate opening for a Health, Safety and Security Coordinator.  This position will be initially located at our global headquarters in Richmond, B.C., and then relocated in late August 2009 to our new head office in Burnaby, B.C.

Reporting to the Manager, Risk, you will be part of a dynamic team that is responsible for the environmental, health and safety, insurance, licensing and risk management activities for the company.   The Health, Safety and Security Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • overseeing established health, safety and security policies and procedures and,
  • researching and recommending best practices for the promotion and maintenance of a safe, healthy and secure workplace.

The Key Responsibilities
Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Promote a culture where the health, safety and security of our employees and customers is top priority for all.
  • Research and report on best practices, current and emerging laws, regulations and industry data related to health and safety and security systems/programs.
  • Assist with implementation, training and compliance and monitoring of policies and procedures at each location.
  • Develop and maintain a health, safety and security compliance matrix for each location.
  • Liaise with regional authorities having jurisdiction over our operations in health and safety matters.
  • Conduct field safety inspections/audits to identify and eliminate/mitigate risks and hazards.
  • Manage 3rd party health and safety audits/inspections that take place at all locations.
  • Assist departments and/or sites with health, safety and security issues on projects as requested.

The Key Requirements:
Some of the key characteristics of the candidate include:

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline is required.
  • One to three years experience in a similar role.
  • A professional designation such as CRSP is considered a strong asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health, safety, and security best practices and regulations across Canadian jurisdictions.  Knowledge of same related to the United States and/or areas outside of North America would be ideal but not a must.
  • Strong researching and organizational skills are must-haves.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation and interpersonal skills both written and verbal.
  • Intermediate skills with MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint are required.
  • A second language skill in French or Spanish would be ideal.
  • Highly motivated, goal-oriented and self directed.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a broad spectrum of employees at all levels.
  • Excellent time management skills, the ability to multi-task in a high-pressure ever-changing environment are keys.
  • Detail oriented and results focused.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise discretion are important qualities.
  • Strong work ethic without sacrificing your ability to have fun on the job!

This job will require you to:

  • Travel to any of our locations for 7 to 10 days per quarter.
