Reporting to the Manager, Safety Engineering, this position is responsible to provide subject matter expertise and passionate leadership in fostering an uncompromising safety by design culture within ATCO Electric. The critical responsibility of this position is the auditing of facilities to confirm compliance with ATCO Electric’s quality assurance program and the Alberta Safety Codes Act; and to facilitate the elimination or control of constructability, operability and maintenance safety hazards through engineered solutions prior to facility design and construction.
COORDINATOR, SAFETY ENGINEERING

Currently we have an immediate opening for a full-time Safety Engineering professional. Reporting to the Manager, Safety Engineering, this position is responsible to provide subject matter expertise and passionate leadership in fostering an uncompromising safety by design culture within ATCO Electric. The critical responsibility of this position is the auditing of facilities to confirm compliance with ATCO Electric’s quality assurance program and the Alberta Safety Codes Act; and to facilitate the elimination or control of constructability, operability and maintenance safety hazards through engineered solutions prior to facility design and construction.
Responsibilities of priority include:
·Conducting Safety Codes quality assurance audits and activities as required by ATCO Electric’s Accredited Corporation Quality Management Plan under the Safety Codes Act.
·Working collaboratively with other departments to implement a “Safety by Design” process within ATCO Electric and lead or facilitate “Safety by Design” reviews with project staff.
·Investigating, analyzing and solving challenging issues related to constructability, operability and maintainability of engineering standards.
·Leading or supporting various safety engineering initiatives (i.e. Arc Flash Programs, Minimum Approach Distance Reviews, etc.) and ensuring all legal, corporate and other commitments are met.
·Monitoring regulations, codes, standards and best practices (some enacted through legislation) that affect ATCO Electric engineering standards and advising and/or taking action on the potential impacts.
·Developing and maintaining effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to maintain currency with new and emerging safety engineering technologies and related methodologies and the relative priority to ATCO Electric.
Required Qualifications:
To be effective in this position, the Safety Engineering Coordinator has to be respected and viewed as acting in the best interests of both ATCO Electric and their employees. The required qualifications for this position are:
·Electrical Engineering degree recognized in Canada and eight years of work experience in high-voltage transmission and distribution systems, which must include work related to on-site field applications.
·Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma recognized in Canada and twelve years of work experience in high-voltage transmission, and distribution systems, which must include work related to on-site field applications.
·Ability to obtain a Safety Codes Council “Certificate of Competency” (Levels A & B both preferred) in the Electrical Discipline within 6 months, a valid driver’s license and standard first aid certificate.
·Extensive knowledge of Alberta Electrical Utility Safety Regulations, Codes, Standards and best practices (some enacted through legislation).
·Strong analytical, communication and collaboration skills, to break down potential problems, understand impacts and develop practical solutions.
·Strong presentation and writing skills.
·Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
