The Henshaw Award for Corporate Leadership in Safety

On the corporate level, safety excellence is traditionally judged on the basis of workplace injury and illness statistics. Although these rates have their place, they don't tell the complete story about the company's leadership and its commitment to worker safety and health. What's needed is a new kind of standard, one that recognizes and rewards organizations with a superior and transparent business ethic around safety and a workplace culture that assures worker protection and optimizes human performance. It is for this reason that SafetyXChange has created the Henshaw Award for Corporate Leadership in Safety.

Once a year, SafetyXChange will bestow the award, named for former OSHA Secretary John Henshaw, on a company that exhibits superior leadership in workplace safety and health. The winning company will be one that integrates health and safety into its essential business mission and objectives, a company where safety is used to define and measure business value and success and an organization that demonstrates the leadership style that fosters vision, commitment, transparency, employee engagement and performance that results in sustainable health and safety performance. What we're looking for isn't necessarily the company with the fewest injuries or illnesses. Candidates for the Henshaw Award must have the most sincere dedication to health and safety as a core business value. These are companies that promote worker health and safety not because the law tells them to but because it's a business imperative not only to prevent human suffering but to optimize human performance.
