Shade Wagons Help California Workers Beat the Heat

June 15, 2009

New California laws require employers to provide shade in temperatures warmer than 85°F (29°C) and also to provide drinking water, plus ice for drinking water in temperatures exceeding 90°F (32°C). All California employers who have staff working outdoors must develop a program to protect workers against heat illness.

Pack Fresh Produce, a California company, is using several mobile shade wagons to make conditions more comfortable and safe for workers picking lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower in the Santa Maria Valley. The trailers, which are towed around the fields, provide shade from the sun and have benches, insulated water coolers and hand-sanitizer dispensers.
