Safety Help for Those Missing Nature’s Early Warning System
April 20, 2009
QUESTION:
Like most animals, human beings are endowed with certain natural defenses against danger. At least most human beings are. There are nearly 2 to 5 million Americans who are missing a key natural defense. Can you name what that defense is?
ANSWER:
The senses of taste and smell. These senses alert people to fire, poisonous fumes, leaking gas, spoiled food and other hazards. Those who lack these senses are thus especially vulnerable to dangers.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
There are special precautions that people who can't taste or smell can take to protect themselves, such as:
- Installing multiple smoke alarms in the home, particularly in the kitchen and near fireplaces.
- Using electric appliances instead of natural gas appliances.
- Diligently checking and clearly marking expiration dates on perishable food.
- Highlighting warning labels on cleaners and other chemical-based products.
- Scheduling regular vehicle checkups, as automotive troubles are often detected through smell.
