Holy Halloween, Batman! It’s the Joker! And Barack Obama!

That’s right. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), while we can still expect trick-or-treating visits from princesses and ghosts, consumers this year are turning to Hollywood and Washington for their costume inspiration. The annual survey conducted by the NRF finds that the top 10 children’s costumes for 2008 are:

5. Pirate
6. Star Wars Character
7. Pumpkin
8. Batman
9. Disney Princess
10. Athlete

Pet costumes are also pretty popular, so you might find these characters accompanying their princesses and superheroes:

3. Witch
4. Princess
5. Hot Dog
6. Superman
7. Bee
8. Bowties/Fancy Collars, etc.

Of course, Halloween is enjoyed by adults, too. In fact, according to the survey, an estimated 51.8 million adults also plan to dress up for the occasion.
