Do’s and Don’ts of Safe Sledding

January 12, 2010

Concussions and broken bones are the result of many sledding incidents in Canada and in the US every winter. Most injuries are caused by colliding with an object, such as a tree or a rock, or being thrown from the sled.

Here are some do's and don'ts of safe sledding.

Do:

  • Choose a sled or toboggan that’s easy to control.
  • Select a hill with a gentle slope, with plenty of room to stop.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Keep your hands, arms and legs inside the sled at all times.
  • Wait until the path is clear of other people before sledding down a hill.

Don’t:

  • Try navigating a hill with too many obstacles, such as trees or bumps.
  • Build snow ramps or jumps on hills where people go sledding.
  • Overcrowd a toboggan with too many riders.
  • Lie down head first on a sled or toboggan.
  • Stop a sled with your hands or feet..

This is a bit ridiculous. Why don't you just tell people to stay on their couch surrounded by pillows so that they never get hurt. People enjoy activities like sledding because there is some level of inherent risk. You basically are telling everyone - "don't have any fun, it might be dangerous"

Hey Brad, "A little Safety doesn't hurt anyone" get the pun there. I have just recently had one of my grandchildren injured at a hill where he was sleding. We always tell our children to look uphill as to what is coming down at you when your ride is finished. Unfortunately for my grandson he had not yet come to a stop before someone ran into him, so when the safety tip is "get a sled or tobbogan that can be eaisly controled", is good advice and could have avoided the crash that injured my grandson. There are risks in everything we do, however intolerance to at least try to make things safer... is risk without fun.
