Animal Attack Statistics

What does this statistic refer to: 1 in 115,489?

Those are the lifetime odds of dying as the result of a dog attack. (Source: National Safety Council Odds of Dying)

Here are a few other biting statistics:

  • Two Canadians died as a result of being bitten by mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus in 2006. In the US that same year, 177 people died from West Nile Virus.
  • Three fatal bear attacks occurred in 2008, two of them in Canada and one in the US.
  • Across the planet, there were four fatal shark attacks in 2008, two of those occurring in Mexico, one in the US and one in Australia.
  • An estimated 77 percent of all dog bites involve animals owned by family or friends.
  • About 100 people across the US die each year as a result of allergic reactions to bee or wasp stings.
  • An estimated 125 people worldwide die each year after being bitten by snakes.
