101 Safety Days of Summer
Good Afternoon All
Today is a great day! Not only is it a Friday but it begins for us, the start of a great campaign we call the "101 Safety Days of Summer". Starting tomorrow there are 101 days until Labour Day Monday. The end of summer is probably not something you want to be thinking about but our journey to get there safely begins today!
In the US Military they have for years conducted a campaign called the 101 Critical Days of Summer to highlight the fact that many of their personnel were being killed on and off the job in record numbers during the summer time period. For this campaign they plan activities, set unit challenges and try to promote that we should never take our mind off safety, particularly when we are in vacation mode. Many press releases from various units state that "it is a time when people tend to forget and get complacent about safety while they are enjoying the summer weather and having fun."
We have taken that idea and put it to practice in the attached document. We have come up with 101 tips to get you and your staff hopefully safely through the summer and have offered it in a calendar format. You can send these tips out as daily reminders, post the calendar itself on OHS notice boards, use the topics as safety meeting ideas or whatever you feel is appropriate.
Our aim with this campaign is to get our province through one of our busiest and arguably most fun seasons without harm.
For those of you who enjoy using videos in your efforts to spread the word, I include here a link to a great 3 minute video from the airforce arm of the US Military on the 101 Critical Days of Summer and why this time of the year is particularly dangerous. Although used in the military context, it is extremely relevant information for any worksite.

We wish for you, your staff and loved ones a very memorable, happy and most importantly, safe summer. It is by working together that we will reduce harm.
