Topic: QUIZ

Put the OSHA Inspection Steps in Chronological Order

March 20, 2009

Instructions: Here are the steps that OSHA inspections generally follow. Your assignment: List the steps in chronological order from first to last. Don’t think that you can get out of this quiz because you’re from Canada. Canadian OHS inspections generally follow the same basic procedures as OSHA inspections—although the terminology used to describe the various steps is different.

The Steps

Walkaround Inspection
Abatement
Credentialing
Appeal
Opening Conference
Closing Conference
Citation

*************
List the steps in the order they happen
*************

Answer

1. Credentialing
2. Opening Conference
3. Walkaround Inspection
4. Citation*
5. Closing Conference
6. Appeal**
7. Abatement

Notes

* Inspectors are required to notify you of all citations during the closing conference. But as a practical matter, many OSHA inspectors will point out citations during the actual walkaround inspection.

** The question of which comes first—abatement or appeal—is likely to come up only when the proposed abatement is the subject of the appeal. Thus, if the employer contests the proposed abatement, the appeal will come before the abatement. If on the other hand, the employer accepts the abatement and the appeal is over a non-related issue, the sequencing is irrelevant and the abatement may take place before the appeal.
