Chilean Miners Celebrate First Anniversary of Rescue
Mine collapses frequently have tragic outcomes, with workplaces turning into tombs for the unfortunate souls trapped underground. However, some stories such as today’s first anniversary of the Aug. 5, 2010, collapse of a Chilean mine, end happily.
Thirty-three miners spent 69 days trapped 2,300 feet (700 meters) below the surface, awaiting rescue, at the San Jose [...]
A Correction to and Epilog on the Eastland Disaster
I received the following note in response to last week’s story about the sinking of the Eastland ferry:
Looks like the author added a digit to the tragic statistics.
LIVES LOST
Women 472
Children 290
Men 82
Total 844
Exactly 1,000 less than the author gave. Other sources also give the Eastland disaster death toll as 844, not 1,844.

• I’ll just use this duct tape, instead of a new piece of hose, it’ll do
• I don’t have that for the recipe, I’ll just use this, it’ll work

The steady drizzle didn’t dampen the crowd’s [...]

Candace Carnahan, The Prophetess of Work Safety
Working at a paper mill for the summer is dangerous work for a 21-year-old. Still, Candace Carnahan was unusually attentive to her personal safety.
But on August 11, 1999, she let her guard down. Her mind focusing on weekend plans, Candace took a shortcut. Instead of walking around the conveyor belt system, she walked across it. [...]
