QGX II PROJECT CCIC TRAINING INITIATIVES USED
Numerous HSE Safety Training initiatives were put in place on the QGX II Project to help better educate the QGX II Project workforce on about their safety on the worksite. Below is a list of CCIC HSE Training initiatives but not limited to and used on the QGX II Project.
OJT Safety Training: On the Job Safety Trainings was introduced in June of 2007. Safety Trainings such as Manual Handling, 100% Tie-off, Manual Handling, Grinder Safety, etc. were done on the work site at the morning toolbox talk to further instruct/teach the workforce to work safely. OJT Style safety training on site saved the QGX II Project over an estimated 150,000 man-hours of production time due to employees not having to be taken off the work site for the estimated 4 hrs for transportation and class time needed to attend a standard formal training session at the CCIC HSE Training center.
100% Practical Tie-Off Training Course: After the workforce had been instructed on how to work safely at Heights, identifying the hazards when working @ Heights, the proper way of climbing a ladder, checking the scaffold tag, checking the platform and hooking up (100% Tie-Off) there lanyards before starting there work. Each participant in the practical 100% Tie -Off training course had to practical demonstrate what he had learned and evaluated on how to work @ heights safely.
Practical Manual Handling Training Course: Importance of proper Manual Handling had been discussed to all class participants. Proper body positioning, communication and coordination during a two man lift, and looking out for pinch points were among the many key points that had been specified during the theory training. Each participant in manual handling class had to practical demonstrate what he had learned and evaluated on proper manual handling safely.
Confined Space Entry Practical Training Course: The importance of following all the requirements prior to entering a confined space was put into practice with the confined space entry practical course. Following the confined space entry theory training class where the roles and importance of each person's job was when making a Confined Space Entry has been instructed. Two practical scenarios were given to the students. One was to let them perform what is needed prior to entry in a confined space. The use of lifeline as a good way of communication was practiced and second on how to respond in case of a Confined Space Emergency along with all other aspects of a confined space entry.
Train X Practical Training Course: The Train X practical training course was conceptualized to validate how CCIC work teams did there jobs safely on the worksite. Work teams were given work assignments and the HSE Trainers would evaluate their work from a safety perspective. How well they implemented safety and safe working habits within their work teams and what they had learned in their HSE Safety Training classes on the QGX II Project.
CCIC HSE Training Videos: The HSE Training Dept. produced a variety of HSE Safety Training Videos to aid HSE Trainers in conducting their HSE Safety training classes. Among the training videos produced by the CCIC HSE Training Team were videos on Manual Handling, 100% Tie-Off, Dropped Objects, a JSTI Instructional Training video, Heat Stress Awareness video, Escape Mask Training video and others.
CCIC Weekly Targeted Toolbox Talk: The HSE Training Dept produced a weekly topic specific Safety Toolbox Talk for every Saturday morning's toolbox talks delivered on the job site with current HSE topics and concerns being discussed with the QGX II Project workforce.
Captain No Zone Comics: Every two weeks over 7000 copies of the two page comic strip was produced in seven languages and distributed on the QGX II Project. These comics appealed to the whole work force.
Copies of the Videos and Comics are available if required.
Basically when this project started we had about 30% of work force skilled and about 70% had never been on a construction project, so the training group faced very difficult challenges. Our new-hired were 50% of our injuries - when we focused on that area - started the black-strip program - we went almost 6 months without a single new-hired being injured.
I truly believe that Charles McDaniel and his Manager - Larry Kornas with the support of the site CCIC management - saved numerous people on our project.
