Nomination Essay

Six years ago STERIS Corporation began a journey toward World Class Safety Excellence. The visible support, commitment, and leadership of the Chief Health, Safety & Environment Officer and the Management Team were essential elements to the success of this important journey. The results continue to be exceptional. The commitment to safety is evident throughout all levels of the organization. As part of STERIS's safety sustainability and improvement efforts, the Management Team has also made a commitment to OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program and to the Occupational Safety & Health Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001. It is an expectation that each applicable STERIS facility located in the United States attain STAR status in the OSHA VPP and applicable international sites receive certification in O HSAS 18001! Five STERIS locations have already attained STAR recognition, and four sites are working through the process of acceptance into the program. Three international manufacturing plants are actively working to obtain OHSAS 18001 certification. Additional sites will also be working toward these important safety goals in the near future. Management commitment and employee involvement are the foundation of an exemplary safety program. STERIS has extensive programs in each of the listed criteria for the Safety Program of the Year Saxcies Award. Key leading and lagging metrics are tracked and communicated throughout the organization worldwide. STERIS Corporation utilizes its employee intranet portal as an effective means to make safety and health topics available to every employee. Corporate safety programs, safety statistics, training, safety tips, and safety observations are just a few examples of the valuable information located on the employee website. An acti ve Post Injury Case Management plan provides the framework for returning employees back to work as quickly as possible in the event of a DAWC injury. Current injury and illness rates for STERIS are considered World Class. The entire Corporation achieved a TRIR of less than 1.3 and a DART of less than 0.3. For our Corporate Headquarters, the TRIR was less than 0.3 and the DART remains at 0! Each facility has a "Central Safety Committee" that follows guidelines and principles established by the Corporate Senior Management Team and the Corporate Central Safety Committee. Other safety committees such as Medical Response Teams, Incident Investigation Teams, Communication Teams, On and Off the Job Safety Teams, Voluntary Protection Program Teams, JSA teams, and many others are active at STERIS locations throughout the globe. STERIS operates under three basic Safety Principles: All workplace injuries can be prevented, Management is responsible for creating and main taining the environment for safety and injury prevention, and All employees must be active in and accountable for ensuring workplace safety. It is for all of these reasons, and numerous more, that I nominate the headquarters of STERIS Corporation for the Saxcies Safety Program of the Year Award.
